 I was honored to be be selected to speak at San Jose State's Information School last month.

San Jo is my hometown and it was super cool to be able to speak at SJSU!

First, let me say that I was happy to learn some good things about being anti-racist. BUT then incredibly saddened when Max referred to the police as "pigs"...police officers are human beings too. Yes, there are some bad people who are police officers. But to generalize a group like that is extremely harmful and leads to hatred. Can we find a solution instead of perpetuating stereotypes? Can we stop the hate and lead with love? Let's look to a future of healing and understanding.

Thank you Max, for teaching and sharing your truth and modeling love / antiracism. Whenever you have a dark day, know your work and words are helping effect change within a neighboring CC a little ways south.

Thanks unknown. Yes, the police have a branding problem. They shouldn't act like an occupying force--especially in BIPOC communities. They are public servants--NOT soldiers.

Good morning, Max! I'm going to watch this video as soon as I can. I did not know (or do not remember) that you went to SJSU. I got my LIS degree from there with the Circle of Learning cohort. That model is the most positive experience I have had in higher education.

I did not go to SJSU, I just did this talk as a favor to Dr. Villagran.

My MLS is from Emporia KS--they have a distance program in Portland.

I'm glad you had a good experience at SJSU.

San Jo is my hometown.

The Short and Tragic Life of Robert Peace hit upon almost all the intellectual struggles I have with education as a scholar of color.  This doesn't mean every person of color will relate to this book, and it doesn't mean that White people can't relate to the book either. It is really a book anyone should read, but the themes covered: Alienation from the dominant culture in an educational institution Bifurcating one's life to handle a life in two worlds What does success mean?        are themes that many people of color in academia can relate to specifically.   Robert Peace was a brilliant Science student, who earned a full scholarship to Yale University.  He graduated and seemed to have everything going for him.
